A confusing science fiction- fantasy. A book that tricks you from the start until the very end.
The Story by Isobelle Carmody is a really haunting and mysterious story. Even at the beginning, it was hard to tell what is real and what is not. Buy this book and read it!
This is one of my favourite books from when I was a teenager. It is a story of a girl called Merlin, who wakes up from an acident in a vehicle and can not remember who she is, where she is, or what is happening. This book will probably keep you guessing to the end, which is one of the reasons I liked it. Why do I still love it now I know the end? Who knows, I guess Merlin's story really captured me!
Merlin wakes up in a crashed and burning vehicle. She stumbles free of the burning wreck not knowing where she is, or WHO she is, or who is the sinister figure in an atmospheric suit trying to find her. She finds an empty age-old city that jarringly does not correspond to her memories of a vibrant modern hub of civilisation. The trees are too big and she does not know her own face. All Merlin has is her name - unfamiliar as it is - and a strange collar and length of chain around her neck. As she travels she meets the Scatterlings, an outcast group who live in the forest, and learns about the Citizen Gods and their domed existence, and the "Blessed Walkers" who enter the realm of the Citizen Gods as the "Offered". Few leave, but those who do have blank minds and wear strange collars around their necks... Merlin is determined to find out who she is, and why the world is so different to what she remembers, and she will do whatever she must to find answers, even if it means entering the domed city of the Citizen Gods themselves.

I read this book after reading The Farseekers, long before Ashling came out. I remember being disappointed that it was not another Obernewtyn book, but my disappointment soon faded as I became sucked into this new mystery about Merlin and where she came from, who she is, and why the world is so different to her memory of it. The ending didn't let me down, except in one regard. It was not a "now everything is better we can all live together in harmony and happiness" ending, but still satisfying. This is a book that will make you think, about the environment and how we treat it, about our notions of "civilised" society, and just what we, today, will make of our future.

A great young adult book that I can still read as an adult and enjoy, even when I know how it ends.
A good fantasy read. A stand alone book, a rarity in this genre. It is sweet, but complex, mostly innocent, but with a depth to it that appeals to older readers.
