I didn't realize this book was so short, and I was sorry when it was over! Very cute story, easy read. Like someone else said: it's a clean story. Writing-wise, it was "cheesy romance", but that's the category I'd put this book in anyway. Likeable characters. Good first book for the writer!

I really enjoyed this quick read, A VALENTINE SURPRISE, by Helena Darcy. At the back of the book, it states that this is her first book. I see great potentional for Ms. Darcy as an up and coming author.

Somedays, rather than get into a long novel, I enjoy reading several shorter stories, and this one was just that, a pleasant quick read. I felt the characters were well constructed and the story plot was plausible.

NOTE This is a clean story with no sex scenes for those who have issues with Erotic Romance, you aren't going to find that here.
Rachael is convinced that her boyfriend Jason is going to propose on Valentine's Day. I thought Rachel was pretty rude to not only Jason (understandable), but also to her friends Matt and Sara, who are there to support her. The story was short, predictable and not bad for a debut. The characters needed more depth, which will come after writing more stories.

Rachel lives in New York and she's expecting a visit from her boyfriend, who lives in LA. Being Valentine's Day and so much romance in the air, Rachel is positive that Jason is going to propose to her and she's ready to quit her job and pack up and move to LA so they can start their happily ever after. Her roommate, Sara, is not one of Jason's biggest fans and can't be convinced that Jason is going to ask Rachel to marry him. She also can't understand why she'd want to date a jerk like Jason, when there's guys like Matt around. Matt is their downstairs neighbor and in addition to being hot, he's also a super nice guy and Sara just knows that he likes Rachel.

Could Sara be right, about everything?

Now for my review. All too often short stories miss their mark, only because there's not always enough pages to weave a complete story so things get rushed to fit in a short space - but that is absolutely not the case with A Valentine Surprise. Helena Darcy did a great job of developing the characters. I loved Rachel and Sara, I got angry with Jason when he was being such a putz and then there's Matt. Oh, what can I say about Matt, other than he's the perfect hot and nice neighbor that every single girl should have! The flow of the story was great too - and very realistic because I could easily envision every scene happening in real life. And best of all, when the story ended, you felt like you went full circle and no were no loose ends to tie up.

This is a realistic view of a woman's imaginary Valentine's dream but reality intrudes.

I was wanting a quick read and saw this book free on today so I downloaded it and started reading right away. The book is easy and fun to read, just what I wanted. It is a very short story but a great chick-lit read.
